: Life imitates art for stuntman Andy

Andy Godbold, right, fought in Manchester at the weekend just days after playing the role of a boxer on ITV1 drama Lewis

Published Date: 13 March 2008

JUST days after stuntman Andy Godbold appeared on ITV1 drama Lewis as an unlicensed boxer, on Saturday night he did it for real. When boxing is not recognised by the Amateur Boxing Association (ABA) or the Professional Boxing Board of Control, it can be referred to as unlicensed boxing. Godbold, 37, can no longer box with the ABA because he is older than 34, their cut-off point, and has had to look elsewhere.
The European Boxing Association (EBF) invited Godbold, of Metfield near Harleston, up to one of their boxing events in Manchester. The show was fully licensed and insured through independent bodies, with a number of championship and white collar boxing fights. Two weeks before, Godbold had a convincing win at Stevenage during a full contact kickboxing fight where he won every round. But this time, Godbold's boxing opponent proved a tough and experienced fighter and the Suffolk fighter also gave away half a stone to his Manchester adversary.Godbold said: "I felt the power of his punches early in the first round, so had to change my game plan from attack to defence. "I spent most of the fight on my back foot, but I enjoyed the experience, and look forward to fighting for the EBF again." Godbold's business, Bolddog, is normally known for its motorcycle stunt antics but he has diversified his company into boxing and fitness training. Bolddog have recently opened a new white collar boxing club at the Kickstop Gym, Whiffler Road, Norwich. Bolddog will soon be opening their personal training studio in Metfield, where people will be able to experience one-to-one boxing coaching and general fitness training.

Irish International Win for Andy Gobold

Harleston Kick Boxing gets off to a great start this week, following their re-opening at Bwell Gym – Harleston. Full Contact fighter Andy Gobold from Metfield returned with a win under his belt following his recent fight in Letter Kenny, Southern Ireland.

It was Andy Godbold’s second visit to Ireland this year, the first was a very close decision, going against Godbold. However this time Godbold took the fight to the Irish Fighter, and took a convincing win.
It was a fast paced 3 times two minute round fight, with the first round too close to call.

Andy was told by his corner to up the pace in the second round, and work his kicks in combination with his hands, which he did to take the second round. The last round saw Godbold push his opponent into the corner. Andy said, “I was hoping for a stoppage, but I ran out of energy towards the end of the last round, I’m over the moon with the win though, especially on away ground!”

Andy, 36 years old, works as a professional Film & TV Stunt Performer. He says kick boxing is a great sport, and keeps him fit for his work. Andy’s next fight will be in Newcastle sometime before Christma
Andy trains both locally with Kevan Goodswen from Harleston Kick Boxing Club and at the Norwich Kick Stop with Martin Lamb.

Kevan has been working very closely with Andy in preparation for the Irish International, focussing on weaknesses highlighted in his last fight in Ireland, and hence this time proved to be the better fighter.
